Understanding it

Understanding everyday aches and pains

Symptoms
  • Dull, aching pain in a muscle or joint
  • Pain that comes and goes with activity
  • Stiffness that eases as you move, then returns
  • Tension headaches linked to posture
  • Pain following a strain, sprain or minor knock
  • Joint stiffness that is worse first thing or after rest
Common causes
  • Muscle strains and joint sprains from everyday activity or exercise
  • Postural strain from long periods sitting or standing
  • Tension headaches linked to neck and shoulder tightness
  • Osteoarthritis and general wear in joints
  • Aches can result from many different causes, so a proper assessment matters more than guessing
When to seek help
  • If an ache has lasted more than a couple of weeks without easing
  • If pain is stopping you working, sleeping or exercising
  • If the same area keeps flaring up
  • A physiotherapy assessment is a good first step in working out what is going on and building a recovery plan
How we treat it

Our approach to aches & pains

An assessment first, so treatment is aimed at the actual cause rather than just the symptom.

Your first appointment covers your symptoms and medical history, so we can establish a working diagnosis rather than treating pain in isolation. From there we build a tailored rehabilitation plan.

Treatment commonly includes strengthening exercise, stretching and practical changes to your daily routine or training. If your symptoms turn out to be unrelated to physiotherapy, we will say so and point you towards the right service.

What your programme can include

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an ache rather than an injury?
Aches and pains cover general discomfort in muscles, joints or nerves that has not been diagnosed as a specific injury. An assessment establishes which one you are dealing with.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly. If your symptoms turn out to be unrelated to physiotherapy, we will refer you to the right service.
How long will treatment take?
It depends on the cause and how long you have had it. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic plan at your first assessment.
When should I see someone about an ache rather than waiting it out?
If it has lasted more than a couple of weeks, keeps returning, or is affecting your work, sleep or exercise, it is worth having it assessed.
Can physiotherapy help with osteoarthritis aches?
Yes. Strengthening exercise, stretching and lifestyle changes are all standard parts of managing osteoarthritis-related aches and stiffness.
