How we treat it

Our approach to knee pain

Strong knees tolerate life. Almost every knee problem ends with a strengthening programme, and starts with an accurate diagnosis.

Your assessment looks at the knee itself, and also at the hips and ankles above and below it, because the knee usually pays the price for problems elsewhere. You leave with a clear diagnosis and a plan.

Treatment blends hands-on work with progressive strengthening for the muscles that support the knee. For arthritis, exercise is the most evidence-supported treatment there is, and we make it manageable rather than daunting.

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to exercise with knee arthritis?
Yes, and it is recommended. Appropriate, graded exercise reduces pain and improves function in knee arthritis. Your programme starts where your knee is now and builds from there.
Why does my knee hurt going down stairs?
Pain on stairs usually points to the kneecap and the tissues around it, which load heavily as the knee bends under your body weight. It typically responds well to targeted strengthening.
Do meniscus tears always need surgery?
No. Many meniscus tears, particularly degenerative ones, do as well with rehabilitation as with surgery. If your assessment suggests a surgical opinion is warranted, we will refer you on.
Can I keep running with knee pain?
Often yes, with adjusted load. We would rather modify your running than stop it, and your programme will set out exactly how.
How long does knee rehabilitation take?
Simple irritations settle in weeks; tendon problems and post-injury rehabilitation take longer. You will get an honest timescale at your first assessment.
