Understanding it

Understanding neck pain

Symptoms
  • Stiffness turning the head, especially driving or checking over your shoulder
  • Aching across the neck and top of the shoulders
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Pain that spreads into the shoulder blade or arm
  • Waking with a stiff, painful neck
  • Clicking or grinding that comes with the pain
Common causes
  • Long hours at desks and screens, and the posture habits that come with them
  • Sleeping positions and unsupportive pillows
  • Irritated joints and muscles in the neck, often after a sudden movement
  • Stress and tension, which show up in the neck more than anywhere else
When to seek help
  • If neck pain has lasted more than a week or two, or keeps returning
  • If pain spreads into the arm, or comes with pins and needles in the hand
  • If headaches are coming with the neck pain
  • Seek urgent medical review for neck pain after a significant accident or fall, or with arm weakness that is getting worse
How we treat it

Our approach to neck pain

Release what is tight, strengthen what is weak, and fix the habits that keep bringing it back.

Your assessment looks at how your neck moves, what your work and sleep set-up look like, and whether the joints, muscles or nerves are driving the pain. Treatment starts the same day wherever possible.

Most neck pain responds well to a combination of hands-on treatment, specific strengthening for the neck and upper back, and small changes to the way you work. Where muscle tension is a big part of the picture, acupuncture or dry needling can help.

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

Why do I keep waking up with neck pain?
Sleeping position and pillow support are common culprits, but a neck that is stiff or weak during the day is more easily irritated at night. Your assessment looks at both.
Can neck problems cause headaches?
Yes. Headaches that start at the base of the skull and spread forwards often come from the joints and muscles of the upper neck, and they usually respond well to treatment.
Is it safe to have my neck treated?
Yes. We use well-evidenced, graded techniques, screen carefully before any hands-on treatment, and never do anything you are not comfortable with.
How many sessions will I need?
Most neck pain improves over a small number of sessions, with the exercise programme doing much of the work between visits. You will get an honest estimate at your first assessment.
Can you assess my desk set-up?
Yes. Workstation and DSE assessments are part of our workplace physiotherapy service, and simple changes there often stop neck pain returning.
