Understanding it

Understanding RSI

Symptoms
  • Aching, burning or tightness in the forearm, wrist or hand
  • Symptoms that build through the working day
  • Weakness or clumsiness with fine tasks
  • Tingling that comes and goes
  • Neck and shoulder tension alongside the arm symptoms
  • Relief at weekends that vanishes by Tuesday
Common causes
  • Sustained, repetitive work: keyboards, mice, tools, instruments
  • Workstation set-ups that keep muscles working at low level for hours
  • Deadline periods with fewer breaks and higher tension
  • The neck and nerves often contribute alongside the local tissues
When to seek help
  • If arm symptoms have lasted more than a couple of weeks
  • If symptoms are building earlier in the day than they used to
  • If work tasks are becoming difficult
  • If tingling or numbness is appearing, to rule out nerve involvement
How we treat it

Our approach to RSI

Treat the irritated tissues, restore capacity, and change the set-up so the load stops exceeding it.

RSI is rarely one structure: your assessment looks at the forearm and hand, the neck and nerves, and crucially the work you do and how you do it. The diagnosis drives the plan.

Treatment combines hands-on work and graded strengthening with concrete workstation changes, break patterns and task rotation. Where employers are involved, our workplace physiotherapy service can assess the set-up directly.

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

Is RSI a real diagnosis?
RSI is an umbrella term for several specific problems: tendon overload, nerve irritation, muscle pain. The assessment identifies which you have, which is what makes treatment work.
Do I need to stop working?
Rarely. Modified tasks, better set-up and scheduled variety usually let you keep working while the tissues recover. Complete rest often delays things.
Will a wrist splint help?
Sometimes, short term, for specific diagnoses. A splint alone rarely fixes the problem; it buys comfort while strengthening and workstation changes do the real work.
Can you assess my workstation?
Yes. DSE and workstation assessments are part of our workplace physiotherapy service, in person or by video.
How long does RSI take to settle?
Caught early, weeks. Long-standing cases take longer, but most improve steadily once load and capacity are rebalanced.
