Understanding it

Understanding sports injuries

Symptoms
  • Muscle strains and tears: hamstring, calf, groin
  • Ligament sprains, most commonly ankle and knee
  • Tendon pain that builds with training load
  • Pain that appeared during or after sport
  • Swelling, bruising or loss of power
  • Recurring injuries that never quite resolve
Common causes
  • Training load rising faster than the body adapts
  • Returning to sport before an old injury fully rehabilitated
  • Strength imbalances and movement habits under fatigue
  • Sometimes simple bad luck, which still deserves good rehabilitation
When to seek help
  • As soon as possible after an acute injury, for diagnosis and a plan
  • If an injury keeps recurring each season
  • If pain builds during sessions and lingers after
  • If swelling, instability or loss of power is not settling
How we treat it

Our approach to sports injuries

Diagnose accurately, rehabilitate progressively, and return you to sport with tests, not guesswork.

Your first appointment establishes exactly what is injured and how badly, because a grade one and a grade three problem need different plans. You leave knowing the diagnosis, the timeline and the first week of your programme.

Rehabilitation progresses from settling the injury through strength, then speed and sport-specific loading, with clear criteria for each step back to training and competition. We would rather adjust your training than stop it.

“I have seen several different therapists at Sammy Margo’s over many years. Every one has been excellent. When I was recovering from a hip replacement the physio I received helped me recover really quickly. Highly recommended.”

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

Should I rest completely after a sports injury?
Rarely. Early, protected movement usually beats complete rest. Your plan will set out what to do in the first days, not just what to avoid.
How soon can I return to sport?
It depends on the injury and the sport. Your programme includes criteria to pass at each stage, so the return date is earned rather than guessed.
Why does my injury keep coming back?
Usually because rehabilitation stopped when pain stopped, before strength and control were fully rebuilt. Finishing the programme is what breaks the cycle.
Do you treat acute injuries or just niggles?
Both. The sooner an acute injury is assessed, the better the plan; and long-standing niggles usually have a fixable cause.
Can you help me avoid injuries in the first place?
Yes. Screening for strength and movement gaps, plus sensible training-load planning, meaningfully reduces injury risk.
