Understanding it

Understanding tennis elbow

Symptoms
  • Pain on the bony point on the outside of the elbow
  • Pain gripping, lifting a kettle or shaking hands
  • Weakness of grip
  • Pain that spreads down the forearm
  • Tenderness to touch over the outer elbow
  • Aching after typing, DIY or racket sports
Common causes
  • Overload of the forearm tendons that lift the wrist and fingers
  • Spikes in gripping activity: DIY weekends, new gym programmes, racket sports
  • Desk and mouse work that keeps the same muscles working for hours
  • Despite the name, most people who get it do not play tennis
When to seek help
  • If elbow pain has lasted more than a few weeks
  • If grip weakness is affecting work or daily tasks
  • If rest alone has not fixed it, which is common
  • If pain came with a sudden injury rather than gradually
How we treat it

Our approach to tennis elbow

Tendons do not respond to rest alone. They respond to the right load, applied progressively.

Tennis elbow is a tendon problem, and tendons recover through progressive loading rather than rest. Your assessment confirms the diagnosis, rules out the neck and other mimics, and finds your starting point.

Treatment is built around a graded strengthening programme for the forearm, with hands-on treatment for the surrounding muscles. For stubborn cases that have not settled with rehabilitation, shockwave therapy has good evidence and is available in clinic.

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

How long does tennis elbow take to heal?
Months rather than weeks is honest: most cases improve significantly within three to six months with the right loading programme. Shockwave can help stubborn cases along.
Should I wear a brace for tennis elbow?
A counterforce brace can reduce pain during aggravating activities and is a reasonable short-term tool. It works best alongside rehabilitation, not instead of it.
Does shockwave therapy hurt?
It is uncomfortable rather than painful, for a few minutes per session. Most people tolerate it easily, and no anaesthetic is needed.
Why did I get tennis elbow when I do not play tennis?
The tendon is loaded by any repeated gripping and wrist work: keyboards, tools, lifting. A spike in that load is usually the trigger.
Will a steroid injection fix it?
Steroid injections can ease pain short term, but research shows worse outcomes at one year compared with rehabilitation. We will give you an honest view for your case.
