How we treat it

Our approach to dizziness

Test the balance system properly, fix BPPV on the spot where present, and retrain the rest.

Your assessment includes the positional tests that identify BPPV. Where it is present, repositioning manoeuvres such as the Epley often resolve the spinning within one or two sessions, which patients tend to describe as small miracles.

For other causes, vestibular rehabilitation retrains the balance system with graded head-movement and balance exercises. Progress is usually steady and measurable, and confidence returns alongside steadiness.

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

What is BPPV and can it really be fixed quickly?
BPPV is loose crystals in the inner ear triggering brief spinning with position changes. Repositioning manoeuvres move the crystals back, and many patients improve dramatically within one or two sessions.
Why do I feel dizzy in supermarkets?
Busy visual environments are demanding for a balance system that is not calibrating well. Vestibular rehabilitation specifically retrains this, and supermarket tolerance is a common goal.
Is dizziness ever serious?
Usually not, but dizziness with sudden severe headache, weakness, slurred speech or double vision needs urgent medical attention. Your assessment screens for anything that needs a doctor first.
Will the spinning come back?
BPPV can recur, and if it does, the same manoeuvres fix it again. We also teach many patients how to manage a recurrence themselves.
Can you treat dizziness at home?
Yes. Home visits work well for patients whose dizziness makes travelling difficult, and balance training in your own environment is often more relevant anyway.
