Understanding acute and chronic pain

Acute pain is short-term and usually related to an injury or a recent operation; it settles as the tissue heals. Chronic pain is different. It persists beyond the normal healing window, typically three to six months or more, and involves a more complex interaction between the nervous system, your emotions and the rest of your life.

Pain management brings both together in one drug-free approach: movement and manual therapy for the physical side, and education and self-management strategies for living well alongside pain that has not yet gone.

What to expect

How we approach pain management

A plan built around your movement, your triggers and what matters to you day to day.

01AssessmentA detailed look at how you move, your tissue health, posture and what tends to bring the pain on.
02TreatmentAn individualised exercise programme alongside hands-on therapy such as massage, soft-tissue work and joint mobilisation, plus relaxation and breathing techniques where they help.
03Self-managementPain education and strategies you can keep using, with multidisciplinary input from your GP or specialist where that is useful.
Who you will see

A team trained in pain, not just injury

Our physiotherapists combine hands-on treatment with pain education and, where useful, approaches drawn from CBT and ACT. Chartered members of the CSP and registered with the HCPC, they will loop in your GP or pain clinic when that helps your overall care.

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between acute and chronic pain?
Acute pain is short-term and tied to an injury or recent surgery, and settles as things heal. Chronic pain persists beyond the usual healing time, typically three to six months or more, and involves the nervous system and lifestyle factors as well as the tissue itself.
Will I just be given exercises, or is there hands-on treatment too?
Both, where each is useful. Most plans combine an individualised exercise programme with manual therapy such as massage, soft-tissue work and joint mobilisation, alongside education on managing pain day to day.
Do I need a GP referral for pain management physiotherapy?
No, you can book directly. If you are already under a pain clinic or specialist, we are happy to work alongside them with your consent.
Can physiotherapy help if I have had pain for years?
Often, yes. Long-standing pain usually needs a broader approach than a fresh injury, combining movement, hands-on treatment and self-management strategies rather than one alone.
Is pain management available at home?
Yes. Home visits cover the whole of London, with the same physiotherapist, or small team of clinicians, seeing you at each appointment.
