Preparing for surgery, and recovering afterwards

Pre and post-surgical physiotherapy is a structured, evidence-based approach to preparing your body before an operation and supporting your recovery afterwards, aiming to reduce complications and re-injury risk while rebuilding strength, flexibility, balance and confidence.

Our physiotherapists have experience across the spectrum of orthopaedic surgery, from routine hip, knee, shoulder and spinal procedures to more complex reconstructions, and build a bespoke package of care around each client rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.

What to expect

How pre & post-surgery physiotherapy works

Continuity from prehab through to your final rehabilitation goals, with one plan running throughout.

01Before surgeryA detailed assessment of movement, strength and pain, with a personalised strength and mobility programme and clear expectations for what follows surgery.
02Early recoveryManaging pain and swelling and regaining range of motion, guided by your surgeon’s timescale.
03RebuildingProgressive strength, balance and functional work, building back towards everyday activities or sport.

“I have seen several different therapists at Sammy Margo’s over many years. Every one has been excellent. When I was recovering from a hip replacement the physio I received helped me recover really quickly. Highly recommended.”

“I had a full hip replacement following a cycle accident, and have daily physio visits on weekdays for three weeks. I am already able to walk short distances without a stick or crutch, and this is entirely due to the work they have done with me.”

Frequently asked questions

When should I start physiotherapy before surgery?
Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before your operation, but even a few sessions can help, so it is worth asking even if your surgery is close.
How soon after surgery can I start physiotherapy?
This varies by procedure and your surgeon’s advice, but many patients begin gentle exercise within days of surgery. We coordinate with your medical team on timing.
Can pre or post-surgery physiotherapy be done at home?
Yes. We provide home exercise programmes alongside in-clinic sessions, which is often useful in the early stages of recovery.
Do you treat complex orthopaedic surgery, not just routine procedures?
Yes. Alongside routine hip, knee, shoulder and spinal surgery, our physiotherapists have experience with more complex reconstructions and revisions.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly, though we are happy to coordinate with your surgeon or consultant where that helps your recovery.
