As a physiotherapist who has worked with women of all ages and backgrounds, International Women's Day feels like an important moment to reflect on the unique health journeys of my female patients.
Throughout my clinical practice, I've witnessed remarkable resilience. The postpartum mother rebuilding core strength after delivery. The athlete returning from an ACL tear with unwavering determination. The grandmother committed to maintaining independence despite arthritis. Each woman facing distinct physical challenges, yet sharing a common thread of perseverance.
The evidence is clear: women's health needs are often uniquely different. From the biomechanical differences that affect injury patterns to the hormonal fluctuations that influence recovery, women's bodies deserve specialised, evidence-based approaches to physiotherapy.
Research shows that women are still more likely to have their pain symptoms dismissed or undertreated in healthcare settings. As a physiotherapist, I've made it my mission to listen deeply, validate experiences, and create treatment plans that address the whole person.
Some areas where physiotherapy makes a profound difference for women include:
Pelvic health support, addressing issues that too often remain unspoken yet significantly impact quality of life.
Pregnancy and postpartum care, helping women navigate the dramatic physical changes of motherhood safely.
Osteoporosis management, preserving bone health and preventing fractures through targeted exercise.
Sport-specific rehabilitation that accounts for female biomechanics and injury patterns.
What continues to inspire me is seeing women reclaim movement that brings them joy. The runner who thought knee pain meant hanging up her shoes forever. The new mother who believed back pain was simply her new normal. The executive who assumed neck tension was just part of the job.
This International Women's Day, I celebrate every woman who has trusted me with her recovery. Your strength has taught me that physiotherapy isn't just about fixing problems—it's about empowering movement for life.
To my female colleagues advancing research in women's health physiotherapy: your work matters profoundly. And to women everywhere: your body deserves care that sees, hears, and supports your unique journey.
