Today, on World COPD Day, we raise awareness about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)—a progressive lung condition that causes breathing difficulties due to airway narrowing and lung damage. COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and it affects more than 1.2 million people in the UK. Living with COPD can make daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, and even talking feel exhausting, impacting both physical health and quality of life.

Physiotherapy, including exercise-based therapies, as a component of COPD treatment is well researched and proved to have positive effects on symptom management, lung function and restoration of control and independence.

How does physiotherapy help manage COPD symptoms?

🌿 Breathing Techniques: Techniques like diaphragmatic and pursed-lip breathing help patients breathe more efficiently, easing shortness of breath and reducing energy expenditure with each breath.

🌿 Airway Clearance Techniques: Specialized exercises and postural techniques help clear mucus from the lungs, which can reduce infection risk and improve lung capacity.

🌿 Exercise Training: Tailored exercise programs focusing on aerobic and strength training help improve endurance and muscle strength, allowing individuals to perform daily tasks more comfortably.

🌿 Energy Conservation Strategies: We teach ways to optimize energy and reduce fatigue, making daily activities easier and less taxing.

Managing COPD is a daily challenge, but with the right support, those with COPD can improve their physical capacity and quality of life. Physiotherapy provides an evidence-based, compassionate approach to managing symptoms and empowering patients to live as fully as possible. 🌟
