Understanding Parkinson’s
- Slower walking, smaller or shuffling steps
- Freezing, especially in doorways or when turning
- Stiffness in the arms, legs or trunk
- Tremor, often starting on one side
- Changes in balance, posture or confidence
- Tiredness, quieter speech or smaller handwriting
- Parkinson’s develops when the brain cells that produce dopamine, which helps control movement, gradually reduce
- Why this happens is not fully understood
- It usually appears after 60, though younger onset does happen
- Symptoms develop gradually and differ widely from person to person
- Soon after diagnosis: early exercise habits make a real difference
- When walking, balance or everyday tasks start to feel harder
- After a fall or a near miss, at home or out and about
- Whenever your medication is reviewed, so your programme keeps pace
Our approach to Parkinson’s
Built around how Parkinson’s actually behaves: movement, balance and the confidence to keep going.
Parkinson’s rehabilitation is its own discipline. Research consistently supports regular, targeted exercise at every stage, working alongside your medication rather than replacing it.
Your physiotherapist builds a programme around your own goals, whether that is walking to the shops, getting out of a chair with less effort or staying confident on stairs. We practise bigger, more deliberate movement, use cueing strategies for freezing, and target the strength and balance that prevent falls. Because you see the same clinician, or small team of clinicians, at every visit, small changes get noticed early and your programme keeps pace.
What your programme can include
A full-time clinical team, not an agency
Many home physiotherapy services are agencies. You enquire, and the visit is passed to whichever freelance physiotherapist on their list is free that day. SMARTPHYSIO does not work like that. Every physiotherapist who comes to your home is a full-time member of our own clinical team, trained and supervised by us.
- Does the physiotherapist work for you full time, or are they booked from a list?
- Who trained them, and who supervises their work?
- Will it be the same physiotherapist at every visit?
- If they are away, who covers, and will they know my case?
With SMARTPHYSIO the answers are simple: our own full-time team, trained and supervised in-house, the same physiotherapist, or small team of clinicians, at every visit, and cover from a colleague in the same team.
